Abstract
There is a growing awareness of school space design and its impact on pupils because a highquality
school space can affect the physical and mental health of users. In addition,
ergonomic school furniture is a key variable in the quality of school space that can improve
the health, interaction and performance of its pupils
The study focuses on two aspects: The first is to assess the quality of school space and
identify the important variables for the users who qualitatively shape their school; and to
investigate this in public primary schools in the city of Oum El Bouaghi; then explore the
impact of school furniture currently used in Algeria on the psychology and behavior of
students, taking into account the same case of public primary schools.
The results obtained from the fieldwork highlighted the green garden, the innovative school
environment and the working environment as qualitative variables of the school space to
ensure the well-being of users; on the one hand and on the other hand; the research on
school furniture as a qualitative criterion for school space gave psychological effects
resulting from the inadequacy of school furniture for the needs of students, and that the
phenomenon of their distraction and their lack of responsiveness and communication with
the class, affected the scientific and cognitive performance of the students.
In conclusion, this work could prompt other Algerian researchers and education officials to
think more about the current and future state of school equipment, to make it more
appropriate in line with the opinions of users as well as the behavior and sensations of
students and above all their well-being.
