Résumé:
Algeria is still the pupillary of North Africa today with its location stretching to the
Mediterranean coast, its wealth inherited from many civilizations and its attractiveness
throughout history as North Africa's gateway to trade. Since ancient times, it has been the
focus of attention due to its location on the trade routes in the Mediterranean. The name of the
Algiers comes from the Arabic word Al-Jazeera, meaning islands. It is said that this beautiful
coastal city was once so named because of the small islets located right in front of the city.
Algeria, which remained under Ottoman rule, in the 16th century, the Ottoman Pasha and the
famous Turkish sailor Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha, combined them with each other and the land
in the form of a breakwater in order to create a safe harbor.
Algeria, which is an important trade base in the Mediterranean, was dependent on the
Ottoman Empire, but had the right to make an agreement or wage war with the European
states under unique conditions. With the weakening of Mediterranean trade in the face of
ocean trade from the mid-16th century, the trade volume had dropped significantly in the mid-
18th century. On the other hand, Algeria, which no longer had a strong position with ships
and ships, faced great difficulties in turning the existing trade into booty. The strengthening
navies of European states were also an important threat to Algerian trade. Faced with these
difficulties from 1770, the activities of Algeria, the commercial center of the Mediterranean,
had almost ceased long before the French invasion in 1830. Algeria, one of the key actors of
the African Continent in terms of its geopolitical location and area, is in a position that hosts
many long-term cooperation areas suitable for Turkey in the political, economic and military
fields. In this respect, bilateral relations between the two countries are very important. The
purpose of this study, the state of trade in Algeria from the past to the present and the current trade relations between Turkey and Algeria will be investigated. In order to achieve this aim,
the trade between the two countries, both in the past and today, will be tried to be revealed.
