Résumé:
Rorty is best known for insisting that the idea of language as a mirror of
nature must be abandoned and with it the idea that philosophy can provide us
with foundational truths. Instead, by separating the private and public square, he
advocated a "self-creation" and a re-imagining of society through his creation of
a new vocabulary. He called for the privatization of religion and made it a
private matter to create a common collective identity, and he also called for
philosophy to be a mere literary genre, so he defended “solidarity” and called for
expanding the sense of “we” to those we thought were “them”, the marginalized
people in our society. His goal was to extend our understanding of the forms of
humiliation we can inflict on other human beings by recognizing our common
capacity to suffer, to feel pain, and to try to overcome this suffering and cruelty.
The focus in terms of the self was on creativity, freedom, individuality, and selfcreation
through new vocabulary, and this is what Rorty's democratic utopia
allows, which is achieved in the context of literary culture, as this culture
appears through the overcoming of religion and philosophy.
