Abstract
Audiovisual media has become a central component in children’s daily lives, playing a profound role in shaping their cognitive, emotional, and behavioral development. This paper examines the impact of audiovisual media on the construction of the Arab child’s consciousness, with a particular focus on the absence of positive role models and the emergence of a crisis of meaning. Drawing on developmental psychology, media studies, and positive psychology, the study argues that contemporary media content has shifted from conveying optimistic narratives and clear moral frameworks toward repetitive messages of violence, failure, pessimism, and uncertainty.
Such media exposure contributes to the internalization of negative worldviews among children, fostering learned helplessness, diminished agency, and reduced optimism about the future. Through emotional arousal, modeling, identification, and repetition, audiovisual media deeply penetrates children’s awareness, influencing their perceptions of success, justice, and personal efficacy. For the Arab child, this influence is further complicated by cultural and value-based tensions between traditional social norms and imported media models, often resulting in confusion, identity fragmentation, and early crises of meaning.
