Abstract
This presentation highlights the significant transformations that have affected religious reference symbols in the upbringing of children in Algeria, driven primarily by technological and digital advancements that have reshaped traditional modes of social and religious education. For decades, the authority of the pulpit—represented by mosques and traditional religious figures—served as the primary source of religious guidance for children. Parents and communities heavily relied on these institutions to transmit religious values and teachins.
However, with the rise of digital media and rapid technological development, a major shift has occurred in how these reference authorities influence younger generations. Online platforms and social media networks—such as YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram—have emerged as powerful agents in shaping children's and youth's beliefs, including their religious orientations.
This study explores the impact of these transformations on the religious socialization of children in Algeria. It examines how digital media have redefined perceptions of religious authority and investigates both the opportunities and risks presented by these platforms. On one hand, they offer innovative ways to communicate religious values; on the other, they pose challenges when the content consumed is unregulated or contradicts local religious and cultural norms.
