Abstract

Sustainable agricultural and rural development is a crucial step towards achieving the first Millennium Development Goal: eradicating hunger and extreme poverty. To achieve this important goal, it is essential to first find ways to increase the incomes of the rural poor, who largely depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. This means improving agricultural development, cooperation, trade, and policy to enhance agriculture's contribution to sustainable food securityTherefore, this research paper presents the main objectives of rural development as not merely a means to boost agricultural production, but a strategy for achieving sustainable agriculture and ensuring long-term food security. Thus, the socio-economic development of rural areas is closely linked to competitive agriculture, which provides employment and income opportunities for a large rural population, as well as generating positive indirect impacts on various other rural activities, such as manufacturing, local services, industries, and tourism
