Abstract

More specifically, we analyze what exactly the states seeks to export and how it has used its external relations and foreign policy to foster the cooperation with other states. We proceed in three steps. The first part discuss the evolution of regional interests and theoretical approaches that attempted to explain the push for regionalism in the field of foreign policy. The second part of the paper outlines the motivations and mechanisms through which the states diffuses the idea of regionalism in foreign policy making. Finally, we take stock the effects of regionalism on the nature and practice of foreign policy, particularly with regard to the gains or limitations that various actors are subjected to in their regional endeavor. We conclude with some considerations to what extent the promotion of regionalism constitutes a genuine agenda for foreign policy analysis.
