The size, morphology, and mucosal enzyme activity of small intestines in broilers were determined from hatch to 7 weeks of age. Our results have shown that the length and the absolute masse of three small intestine regions were significantly increased (p < 0,05) as a function of age-related growth rate, reaging from one segment to another. Regarding the morphometric study of the small intestine, a recent approach (the microdissection technique) shows that the absorption and assimilation capacities of the chicken reached quickly the maximal level, followed by a rapid and early development ( p < 0,01) of different histological parameters of the small intestine, namely the height, width, perimeter and surface of villi and intestinal crypts. Biochemical study of the three compartments of the small intestine showed a relative small intestinal functional development in association with the development of the enzymatic activity of alkaline phosphatase (p < 0,05) and gamma-glutamyltrasféras (p < 0,05) that is accompanied by the morphometric development during the early weeks of life stages of chick. .
