اهتم الغرب بالاستشراق وذلك من خلال التعرف على شعوب الشرق وثقافتهم ومعتقداتهم وآدابهم وأساطيرهم، والحديث عن الاستشراق يقودنا إلى الحديث عن الاستعمار نظرا لما لهما من صلة، وباعتبار الجزائر مستعمرة فرنسية فقد كانت محور اهتمام المستشرقين تمهيدا للتأثير على هذه البلاد وأهلها، فقد سخرت فرنسا جيوش من المفكرين والمترجمين والكتاب والخبراء، للقيام بدراسات تخدمها من الناحية السياسية والاستعمارية، واستخدم المستشرقون في ذلك وسائل كإنشاء اللجان العلمية والجمعيات لتحقيق أهدافهم ونواياهم وغايتهم، فتوغلوا في الجزائر، وبسطوا نفوذهم فيها مبكرا، وذلك لخدمة الإدارة الاستعمارية الفرنسية.
